What is PD charger?
A PD (Power Delivery) Charger technology refers to a standardized charging protocol developed by the USB Implementers Forum. This technology is centered around the USB-C connector and is designed to handle higher power levels, allowing a range of devices to fast charge over a USB connection.
The following are the specific advantages of the PD Charger:
Variable Voltage
PD technology can adjust these values based on the connected device’s needs. This allows the charger to provide power at varying levels, such as 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, or even 20V.
Bi-Directional Power
Power can flow in both directions. This means that a device can either send or receive power. For example, a laptop can charge a smartphone or vice versa.
Bi-Directional Power
Power can flow in both directions. This means that a device can either send or receive power. For example, a laptop can charge a smartphone or vice versa.
Higher Power Delivery
PD can deliver up to 150W of power, making it suitable for charging larger devices like laptops.
What is PD 3.1?
PD 3.1, or USB Power Delivery 3.1, is a fast charging technology based on the USB Type-C interface developed by the USB Implementers Forum. It is a standard that facilitates quicker charging over a USB connection with a maximum power support of 240W.
Is PD charging safe for laptop?
Yes, PD (Power Delivery) charging is generally safe for laptops, provided that the PD charger and the cable used are of standards set by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). It’s essential to ensure that your PD charger is compatible with your laptop regarding power requirements and the USB-C connector.
StablePSU’s PD Charger is crafted using safe materials to ensure a secure charging experience. Some of these safety materials include:
Over-current Protection: This feature ensures that the charger does not supply more current than your laptop can handle, preventing potential damage.
Over-voltage Protection: Protects your laptop from receiving voltage above the safe threshold.
Short-circuit Protection: Prevents potential damage from short circuits.
Over-temperature Protection: Ensures the charger operates within a safe temperature range to avoid overheating.
Flame-retardant Materials: The outer casing of the PD Charger is made from flame-retardant materials to provide an extra layer of safety.
These safety features collectively provide a secure and efficient charging solution for your laptop.
USB Type A Port
USB A port is the most commonly known USB type, usually rectangular with four metal points. What charger you have are plenty of USB-A connectors at home, and you’re pretty familiar with how they look. It’s the cable with that one wider end.
The connector is not rotationally symmetrical, and both ends are different, corresponding to a different port type. The interface could be connected to various devices like computers, mobile phones, tablets, and other 3C devices.
Pins Introduction
In this connector, the VBUS and GND pins transmit power signals, while the D- and D+ pins are designed for the data signal transmission. Given USB power adapters are primarily for device charging, only VBUS and GND pins are adapted for power transmission.
USB-C Port
USB-C simplifies. At first, it’s fully reversible, so no matter what side of the connector you grab to plug in, it’s all the same. Then, its bi-directional power capabilities allow for the power flow in both directions, having devices charge each other and power larger displays. Also, USB-C has better data rates which can drive high-resolution monitors.
USB-C Interface
USB C interface has 24 pins, 12 on each side, including VBUS, GND, CC1/CC2, SBU1/SBU2, and D+/D-, each serving a specific function. The CC1/CC2 pins are essential as they facilitate two-way communication for power negotiation and data transfer, enabling PD chargers to adjust power output according to the device’s needs.
When there is no connection, the pin definitions on both sides are center-symmetrical, so it is the same situation when type C is plugged forward and reverse.
